Description
Buffet Froid (Cold Cuts, 1979) is a beguiling black comedy from director Bertrand Blier (Going
Places) starring Gérard Depardieu. Depardieu plays unlucky Alphonse, who keeps stumbling
upon corpses, both of strangers and of ones he loves. He drops his knife on the subway, only to
find it sticking out of a dying man, and death seems to stalk him in bizarrely surreal ways the
rest of the movie. He reports the stranger’s demise to his police inspector neighbor (Bernard
Blier, Bertrand’s father), who reacts with casual apathy. This morbid duo then meets up with
a confessed killer (Jean Carmet), and the three of them embark on a series of darkly comic
incidents that overthrow any notion of morality or decency.
